is the degradation of the soil which has become relatively
unresponsive to the practical methods of prohibitive, conventional
agricultural practices; resulting in poor crops. Secondly,
the unfair exploitation in the market place; further aggravated
by the inevitable liberalization and globalization processes
has reduced demand and lowered the prices of commodities.
A challenging realization had crystallized in the minds of
at least some farmers that their direct intervention was the
only remedy to address these problems.
An amendment to the Indian
Companies Act, 1956 in the Finance Bill 2002 has provided
for the formation of "Producer
Companies" - a hybrid between a Co-operative Society
and a Private Limited Company. Such institutions are contemplated
to be owned and governed by the share holder farmers but administered
by corporate professional managers employed by them.
The
Indian Organic Farmers' Producer Company Limited, incorporated
in Kochi under this Act, by farmers and for farmers, is emboldened
to take on the challenges to assist in the production and
marketing of "Under Conversion"
and "Organic Certified"
products. Our vision is to restore biodiversity, ensure
sustainability and thereby empower the farmer. Building competency
among the farmers to grow commodities conforming to global
standards and becoming a prudent player in marketing their
products professionally will be the objectives. The consumers
benefit by our providing them with uncontaminated and safe
products. The contributions of these interventions in conserving
nature and in establishing a balance in the eco-system is
